Behavior is Communication: Are You Listening?

Event Description:

This inservice will discuss how parents and professionals can become "better" listeners to communication attempts of individuals with autism (as well as other special needs). The speaker will provide a framework for developing a positive behavior support plan to determine "why" and "what" behaviors mean.  Communication interventions and strategies will be provided. Participants will learn to understand "why" behavior occurs, how to identify behavior as communication and communication strategies to use with individual with autism.

Customized Employment and Transition Age Youth Conference

Event Description:

This conference will introduce the process of discovery as an alternative to traditional assessment, demonstrate how it works for youth with significant support needs and can be part of age appropriate transition assessments. This strategy enables the IEP team to create and provide truly individualized work experiences that enable youth to participate as successfully as possible in employment.

Conference Time: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM

There is no fee. Training materials, continuing education hours and a light lunch will be provided.

Planning a Comprehensive, Blended Method Classroom Program for Students on the Autism Spectrum

This training is designed to provide foundational training for classroom teachers and school district teams (teachers, therapists, psychologists) in the development and design of a blended method program for students with autism spectrum disorder. Covered topics will include: the benefits of an integrated approach to intervention; sensory integration; design of the physical classroom structure; individual student programs; assessment and data collection and dissemination; and developing a daily home/school communication system.

The challenges faced and presented by children and adults with autism can vary significantly. We know; we've provided residential, supported living and day/vocational programming for adults with autism for over 27 years. This three-day, highly interactive and comprehensive workshop will ensure you receive a thorough understanding of autism, gain exposure to and comprehend Bittersweet's value-based approach and methodology, and specific tools and techniques we use to create restraint-free, community-based living and working environments for adults with ASD. This training is for Paraprofessionals in Public Schools and will address autism and the developmental challenges associated with the disorder. The role of the Paraprofessional working with individual children within the context of the classroom and school environment will be overviewed with an emphasis on effective strategies that will enhance children's developmental skills in the areas of social interaction, language/communication and cognitive processing/problem solving. NOTE: Day 3 of the training will be October 7, 2011.

Imagine the Possibilities: Literacy Practices for Students with Significant Disabilities

This four session series will consist of two days of focused professional development and two regional follow-up sessions. For the initial two sessions choose one location: October 4 and 5, 2011 - Lorain County Community College Spitzer Conference Center 1005 N. Abbe Road Elyria, OH 44035 - October 5 and 6, 2011 - NEOUCOM Ralph Regula Conference and Event Center 4209 State Route 44Rootstown, OH 44272 - The regional follow-up sessions will be scheduled in winter and spring. You will be able to choose either an afternoon or after school session in your SST region. Who should participate? Intervention specialists, SLPs, OTs, paraprofessionals, and administrators. Team attendance is highly encouraged. Day One Presenters Pam Williamson, Ph.D. and Christi Carnahan, Ed.D. assistant professors of special education at the University of Cincinnati - Day Two Focused breakout sessions to facilitate action planning for the implementation of literacy supports in the classroom/district. Registration fee is $100 for the entire series. Carnahan and Williamson's recently published text will be the foundation for the series and is included in the registration fee. This training is designed for special education teachers working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other special needs. Participants will gain practical knowledge in collecting, interpreting and presenting behavioral data regarding individual students who require more support in addition to classroom and/or whole group behavior plans.
